black bears
These black bears, designated as the spirit bear (when their coat color is that of a polar bear), were photographed on the west coast of British Columia, north of Bella Bella. The spirit bear, or Kermode bear, is a rare color variation of the black colored black bear. The color variation is caused by a double recessive gene, which must occur in both breeding bears at the time.
